APPROVAL FOR NEW SUNFLOWER HERBICIDES IN MISSOURI

The EPA has cleared two important herbicides important to sunflower growers for the 2001 growing season:

Select is a post emergent herbicide for grass weed control. It provides preferred control of Johnsongrass and quackgrass and greater control of some annual grass weeds. This is a full Section 3 label for sunflowers (has received full national registration) and is valid for Missouri. Valent Corporation produces this product, which has been available for soybeans for a number of years. This expands the post emergent options available to farmers, which have previously been limited to Poast.

Spartan herbicide has received Section 18 (temporary approval) for use on sunflowers grown with conservation tillage practices in Missouri. The Missouri Department of Agriculture filed this application at the request and assistance of the Jefferson Institute. Spartan is a pre-plant incorporate or pre-emergent small seeded broadleaf product especially good at providing control of waterhemp and morning glory. This temporary approval is from April until December 2001. This product is manufactured by FMC Corporation.

"The new herbicide options available can definitely benefit Missouri sunflower producers", states Jerry Weber, a Pettis County sunflower producer. "Select herbicide will provide another choice for producers in the limited field of post emergent weed control, and the availability of Spartan is an advantage to producers like myself, who have had previous broadleaf control problems."
